How to modify a cable tray tee to a bend

You can convert a cable tray tee into a bend by cutting, bending the side walls, and securing with brackets or splice plates to achieve the desired angle.

Step-by-

Step Process

Plan the Bend Determine the angle and radius of the bend required. Standard bends are usually 45° or 90°, but the radius depends on cable type and tray width. Ensure the bend will not damage cables or exceed bending limits.

Mark and Cut the Tray Use a marker to outline where the side walls need to be bent. Cut the tray carefully along the marked lines using a hacksaw, angle grinder, or metal shears. Smooth any sharp edges with a file to prevent cable damage.

This is similar to the method used in EzyTray fabrication. Bend the Side Walls Bend the side walls down or outward to form the desired angle. For precise bends, a radius plate or bending jig can be used.

Ensure the bend is uniform and matches the planned angle.

Attach Brackets or Splice Plates Use T

X brackets, riser links, or splice plates to secure the bent section to the existing tray. Always install brackets in pairs on each side of the tray for stability. Fasten with SBH or CNH splice nuts and bolts, placing smooth heads on the inside to avoid cable damage.

Secure the Tray to Supports Mount the modified tray onto strut or support systems using hold-down units. Ensure the tray is secured at least twice along its length to maintain stability. Check Alignment and Clearance Verify that the bend aligns with the rest of the cable tray system and provides sufficient clearance for cables.

Adjust if necessary to prevent stress on cables or connectors.

Tips and Considerations

Use proper PPE when cutting and bending metal trays. Avoid sharp bends that could damage cables; maintain a smooth radius. Pre-fabricated bends or elbows can be used if modification is difficult or if the tray material is rigid.

Test fit the modified section before final fastening to ensure proper alignment. By following these steps, a cable tray tee can be effectively modified into a bend while maintaining structural integrity and cable safety.
