A new computer is connected to the switch

When a new computer is connected to a switch, the switch detects the device, learns its MAC address, and enables it to communicate efficiently with other devices on the network.

How the Connection Works

When you plug a computer into a switch using an Ethernet cable, the switch immediately detects the physical connection through the port. The computer's Network Interface Card (NIC) sends out data frames, which the switch receives and examines to identify the device's MAC address. The switch then updates its internal MAC address table, mapping the computer's MAC address to the specific port it is connected to, allowing future data frames to be forwarded directly to that device rather than broadcasting to all ports.

IP Address Assignment

Most networks use Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to automatically assign an IP address to the new computer. Once the computer requests an IP address, the DHCP server responds with an available address, subnet mask, gateway, and DNS information. This enables the computer to communicate with other devices on the LAN and access external networks if connected through a router.

Network Communication

After the switch learns the MAC address and the computer receives an IP address, the device can send and receive data efficiently. Unlike hubs, which broadcast data to all devices, switches forward packets only to the intended recipient, reducing network congestion and improving performance. Each port on the switch represents a separate collision domain, allowing multiple devices to communicate simultaneously without interference.

Best Practices

Ensure the Ethernet cable is compatible with the switch port (Cat5e or Cat6 for Gigabit Ethernet). Verify that the switch port is active and properly configured, especially in managed switches with VLANs or security settings. Confirm that the computer's NIC is enabled and configured to obtain an IP address automatically if using DHCP.

By following these steps, the new computer becomes fully integrated into the network, capable of communicating with other devices efficiently and securely.
