Automatic closing of the distribution box

Automatic closing, or reclosing, restores power quickly after temporary faults by automatically re-energizing the distribution feeder.

Purpose and Function

Automatic reclosing is designed to minimize power interruptions caused by temporary faults such as lightning, wind, or ice accumulation. When a fault occurs, the circuit breaker trips to isolate the affected section. The automatic reclosing mechanism then recloses the breaker after a preset time delay, attempting to restore power without manual intervention.

If the fault has cleared, the feeder returns to normal operation; if not, the breaker trips again and the process repeats until a predefined number of attempts, after which the breaker remains open if the fault is permanent. Operation in Distribution SystemsMulti-shot vs. Single-shot Reclosing: Multi-shot relays (e.g., Type NLR) are commonly used in distribution systems to allow several reclosing attempts, while single-shot relays (e.g., Type NSR) are typically applied in high-voltage transmission lines or special cases.

Timing and Coordination: The reclosing delay is carefully set, often between 0. 5 to 1 second, to allow transient faults to clear while avoiding unnecessary repeated operations. Integration with Customer Equipment: In systems with critical loads, automatic switching schemes like Automatic Throw Over (ATO) coordinate with reclosing devices to transfer power to alternate feeders and restore service efficiently.

Proper coordination prevents unintended switching and repeated outages.

Technical Considerations

Closing Circuits: The breaker's solenoid mechanism must ensure complete closure even if auxiliary switches open prematurely.

Latch-

Checking Switches: For trip-free mechanisms, latch-checking switches confirm the breaker is ready for reclosing. Undervoltage Devices: When undervoltage devices are present, reclosing timing must be coordinated with the trip settings to achieve reliable restoration.

Benefits

Improved Reliability: Reduces the number of customers affected by temporary faults. Faster Restoration: Restores power automatically without waiting for manual intervention. Enhanced Metrics: Helps utilities improve reliability indices such as CAIDI (Customer Average Interruption Duration Index) and SAIFI (System Average Interruption Frequency Index),.

Automatic closing of distribution boxes is a key component of modern distribution automation, ensuring efficient fault management and minimal service disruption.
