Papua New Guinea Communication Optical Cable

PNG's optical cable infrastructure is primarily managed by PNG DataCo and supported by the Coral Sea Cable System, providing high-speed international and domestic connectivity. Coral Sea Cable System (CS2)The Coral Sea Cable System (CS2) is a 4,700 km submarine fiber-optic cable linking Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and Honiara in the Solomon Islands to Sydney, Australia, a major global internet hub. The system has a total capacity of 40 terabits per second, with each country able to access up to 20 terabits/sec if fully expanded.

CS2 uses Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and 100G technology, ensuring high reliability and scalability. The project was constructed by Vocus Communications and Alcatel Submarine Networks, with funding from the Australian and PNG governments. The CS2 project also includes the Solomon Islands Domestic Network (SIDN), a 730 km submarine cable connecting Honiara to provincial centers, and is designed to reduce reliance on expensive satellite links while improving internet speed and affordability.
