Outdoor Cabinet Grounding Wire Standard

Outdoor cabinet grounding wires should be copper, sized according to NEC Table 250. 122, with proper insulation and direct connection to a main ground bus for low-impedance fault paths.

Conductor Material and Type

Copper conductors are preferred due to superior conductivity, corrosion resistance, and mechanical strength, which is critical for outdoor environments. Tin-plated copper may be used for grounding strips and connectors to prevent corrosion and ensure long-term reliability. Insulation: Green-and-yellow VW-1 rated insulation is recommended for jumpers and grounding wires to indicate safety grounding and provide flame resistance.

Wire Sizing

Grounding wire size depends on the overcurrent protection device (OCPD) rating protecting the circuit, as specified in NEC Table 250. 122. Common residential or small commercial applications (100–200 A) typically use 4 AWG copper or 2 AWG aluminum.

Larger OCP

Ds require proportionally larger conductors, up to 3/0 AWG copper for 800 A.

For OCP

Ds above 800 A, the EGC must be at least 12. 5% of the area of the largest ungrounded conductor.

Installation Practices

Direct connection: All ground conductors should connect directly to the main ground bus (MGB); avoid daisy-chaining to reduce impedance and ensure reliable fault current paths. Bonding: All metal parts of the cabinet, including mounting plates and equipment, should be bonded to the MGB to maintain equal electrical potential. Ground rods: If a single rod does not achieve ≤5 ohms resistance, multiple rods or a halo system should be installed, spaced 8–10 feet apart depending on rod length.

Short leads: Mount the MGB as low as possible in the cabinet to minimize lead length to ground electrodes. Compression lugs: Use two-hole long barrel compression lugs for secure connections, meeting NEBS Level 3 criteria if applicable.

Additional Considerations

Surge protection: Surge protectors should discharge directly to the MGB using dedicated conductors. Outdoor exposure: Ensure all connections are corrosion-resistant and protected from moisture ingress. Tin-plated copper or coated lugs are recommended.

Equipment grounding: Each piece of equipment, including AC, DC, RF, and data/PoE devices, should have its own grounding conductor to the MGB. By following these specifications, outdoor cabinets will have a low-impedance, reliable grounding system that meets NEC requirements, protects equipment from surges, and ensures personnel safety.

Outdoor Cabinet Protection Through Better Grounds and Bonding

MGB should be mounted as low as possible in the cabinet (shorter lead to Ground Electrodes) Surge protection should always be discharged directly to MGB using dedicated cable/wire.

EMC implementation

Each cabinet must be equipped with an earthing bar or a ground reference metal sheet. All shielded cables and external protection circuits must be connected to this point. Anyone of the
