Huawei wavelength division multiplexing equipment optical modules

Huawei WDM optical modules, including CWDM and DWDM types, enable multiple wavelengths to be transmitted over a single fiber, supporting high-capacity, long-distance optical networks.

Types of Huawei WDM Optical Modules

Huawei offers two main categories of WDM optical modules: Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM): CWDM modules transmit multiple wavelengths with wider spacing, typically used for medium-distance applications. They are cost-effective and simpler to deploy but support fewer channels compared to DWDM. Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM): DWDM modules transmit tightly spaced wavelengths, allowing a higher number of channels on a single fiber.

DWD

M is ideal for long-distance, high-capacity networks, providing scalable transmission beyond traditional TDM systems.

Both CWDM and DWD

M modules allow multiple optical signals to coexist on a single fiber without interference, using passive multiplexers and demultiplexers to combine and separate wavelengths efficiently.

Technical Features

Center Wavelengths: Standard optical modules operate at 850 nm, 1310 nm, or 1550 nm, while WDM modules support multiple center wavelengths simultaneously. Transmission Distance: Long-distance WDM modules often have higher transmit power. When used with short fibers, optical attenuators may be required to prevent overloading the receiver.

Scalability: DWDM systems can support 8, 40, 80, 96, or 120 wavelengths, enabling flexible network expansion. Integration with OTN: Huawei WDM modules are often deployed within Optical Transport Networks (OTN), which provide advanced operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM), flexible grooming, and protection schemes.

Applications

Huawei WD

M optical modules are widely used in: Data Center Interconnects (DCI): High-capacity DWDM modules support AI workloads and distributed GPU clusters, enabling low-latency, high-bandwidth connectivity across metro and regional networks.

Long-

Distance Transmission: Both CWDM and DWDM modules reduce the number of fibers required by multiplexing multiple wavelengths on a single fiber, making them suitable for metro and long-haul networks. Cloud and Hyperscale Networks: WDM modules, including pluggable ZR/ZR+ coherent optics, are increasingly adopted by cloud providers to expand optical interconnect capacity.

Market Trends

The WD

M equipment market, including Huawei's optical modules, has seen significant growth due to rising demand from cloud providers and AI infrastructure. In 2025, direct purchases of WDM equipment for DCI increased nearly 40%, with disaggregated WDM segments showing strong momentum. The trend is toward open, modular optical architectures and high-capacity interconnect fabrics to support distributed computing workloads.

Huawei's WDM optical modules, therefore, combine high-capacity transmission, long-distance reach, and integration with OTN, making them a key component in modern optical networks.
