Tips for using fiberglass cable trays

Fiberglass cable trays should be installed with proper support, careful cutting, and secure fastening to ensure durability, safety, and compliance with standards.

Preparation and Planning

Before installation, review construction drawings and conduct on-site inspections to determine the tray route, layer structure, installation height, and support spacing. Pre-measure bends, ramps, and T-junctions, especially in complex environments like underground shafts or chemical plants. Ensure the load-bearing capacity of the tray matches the cable quantity to prevent deformation or loosening.

Inspect all materials for cracks, broken edges, or fiber delamination, and protect trays from heavy impacts, drops, or prolonged sun exposure during transport and handling.

Cutting and Drilling

Fiberglass is easy to work with using ordinary hand tools, but excessive pressure should be avoided to prevent dulling tools or softening the resin. Field cutting can be done with a circular power saw with an abrasive cut-off wheel or a hack saw (24–32 teeth per inch). Drill fiberglass as you would hard wood using standard twist drills.

Any cut, drilled, or sanded surface must be sealed with compatible resin. Carbide-tipped saw blades and drill bits are recommended for large quantities, and the material should be firmly supported during cutting to prevent chipping.

Support and Mounting

Install supports first, which can be wall-mounted, column-mounted, or suspended depending on site and load requirements. Typical support spacing is 1. 5 to 2 meters.

Each tray section should be equal to or greater than the support span, and splices should ideally be located at quarter spans. When hanging from beams, use appropriate clamps with full thread engagement. Torque for thread rod nuts should be 3–4 ft.-lbs., and spacing between trapeze supports should not exceed the distance between splice plates.

Securing and Cable Installation

Use compatible fasteners and connectors to secure the trays. Ensure cables are properly supported and maintain minimum bend radii at tray exits. Only install cables approved for tray use, such as Type MV or MC cables, or others specifically approved for cable trays.

Follow all relevant electrical codes and standards for voltage, insulation, and grounding.

Safety and Maintenance

Always follow GRP/FRP cable tray installation standards and construction specifications. Avoid overloading trays, and periodically inspect for damage, corrosion, or loosening. Proper installation ensures long-term performance, corrosion resistance, and electrical insulation benefits inherent to fiberglass trays.

By adhering to these guidelines, fiberglass cable trays can provide a durable, low-maintenance, and safe cable management solution in corrosive or demanding environments.
