Cable tray model and specification table diagram

Cable trays come in various types, materials, and load capacities, with detailed specifications and model charts available from manufacturers like Legrand, Eaton, ABB, Hubbell, and ApexTray.

Types of Cable Trays

Ladder Tray: Features side rails with rungs, ideal for heavy-duty cables and long spans. Provides excellent ventilation and easy cable access (Hubbell NEXTFRAME® Ladder Tray). Solid Bottom Tray: Offers full protection for cables, suitable for sensitive instrumentation or areas with minimal heat buildup.

Ventilated Tray: Perforated or slotted bottom allows airflow to prevent overheating, commonly used in industrial and commercial applications. Wire Mesh Tray: Lightweight, flexible, and easy to install, often used for light-duty or retrofit applications. Channel Tray: Compact design for short runs or aesthetic applications, available with solid or ventilated bottoms.

Materials and Finishes

Steel: Pre-galvanized or hot-dip galvanized for corrosion resistance. Stainless Steel: AISI 316L for high corrosion resistance, especially in chlorinated or marine environments. Aluminum: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, suitable for indoor and outdoor use.

Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP): High resistance-to-weight ratio, excellent for corrosive environments.

Load Ratings and Dimensions

Cable trays are rated by load class, which defines the maximum load for a given support span. Rung spacing: Typically 6–9 inches (150–230 mm) for ladder trays to support cables and maintain bend radius. Widths and depths vary by manufacturer; common widths range from 50 mm to 600 mm or more, with depths from 25 mm to 150 mm.

Accessories and Fittings

Elbows, tees, reducers, and covers are available to create continuous cable pathways. J-bolt kits and mounting hardware allow attachment to floors, walls, ceilings, or equipment racks. Solid covers or ventilated covers can be added for protection or airflow management.

Standards and Compliance

Cable trays comply with UL, NEMA, CE, and other national standards depending on the region. Proper installation ensures safety, prevents overheating, and maintains cable integrity.
