Cable Tray Fabrication Dimensions Diagram

Cable trays are fabricated in standard widths, heights, and rung spacing to support and route electrical or data cables safely and efficiently.

Standard Dimensions

Width and Height: Cable trays are typically available in widths ranging from 50 mm (2 in) to 600 mm (24 in) for light to medium loads, and up to 1200 mm (48 in) for heavy-duty applications. Heights (side rail depth) commonly range from 50 mm (2 in) to 150 mm (6 in) depending on the tray type and load requirements. Rung Spacing: For ladder-type trays, rung spacing is usually 150 mm to 230 mm (6–9 in) to maintain cable support and prevent sagging.

Solid-bottom or perforated trays may not have rungs but have a continuous base with ventilation holes. Bend Radius: The minimum bend radius for cables exiting the tray is critical to prevent damage. Typically, the bend radius should be at least 6 times the cable diameter for power cables and 10 times for fiber optic cables.

Tray Types and Fabrication

Ladder Tray: Open design with side rails and rungs; ideal for heavy cables and long runs. Fabricated from 16-gauge steel tubing or aluminum, with finishes like pre-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized, or powder-coated. Perforated Tray: Solid base with holes for ventilation; supports medium loads and allows cable tie attachment.

Solid-

Bottom Tray: Fully enclosed base; used where aesthetics or protection from dust and debris is required. Wire Mesh Tray: Welded steel wire mesh; lightweight and flexible, suitable for light instrumentation or control cables.

Fabrication Considerations

Material Selection: Steel, stainless steel, or aluminum depending on environmental conditions and corrosion resistance requirements. Load Class: Defined by tray width, rung spacing, and support span; affects mechanical strength and cost. Modular Design: Trays are fabricated in standard lengths (typically 3 m / 10 ft) and can be joined with couplers or fittings for bends, tees, and transitions.
