Wiring inside the switch cabinet

Proper wiring inside a switch cabinet ensures safety, organized cable management, and reliable operation of electrical and network systems.

Cabinet Layout and Device Placement

When wiring a switch cabinet, terminals are typically installed in the upper part or on lower rails, depending on cabinet type and electrician agreement. Neutral ('N') strips should be placed next to each terminal group, and protective devices like residual current devices (RCDs) and overcurrent protection devices are installed below the terminals. Three-phase circuits may have RCDs on the right side of the cabinet.

Leave about 30% reserve space for future expansion, and place KNX or UPS equipment at the bottom for accessibility and weight distribution.

Rails for P

E protective cables should be installed on the left side, with fingered strips covering the lower right terminals of RCDs and overcurrent devices.

Cable Routing and Management

Organized cable routing is critical for safety and maintenance. Power and network cables should be routed from different directions and secured with zip ties. Use cable trays, cable ties, and labels to keep cables tidy and easily identifiable.

Label each network cable and server asset number, and use color-coded cables to differentiate internal and external network connections. Start routing cables from the top of the cabinet and ensure airflow is not obstructed to prevent overheating. Shorter patch cables can reduce clutter and improve performance.

Wiring Techniques and Safety

Use stranded wire for vibration-prone environments to prevent breakage. Push-in wire connectors simplify series loop wiring for tamper switches or other sensors. Grounding is essential: maintain clean chassis and signal grounds to avoid ground loops and interference.

Lighting circuits inside the building typically use YDY 1. 5mm² wires, while outdoor circuits use YDY 2. 5mm² wires.

Ensure all high-voltage splices are in accessible junction boxes to comply with electrical codes.

Specialized Wiring Considerations

For tamper switches in cabinets, series loop wiring is common, connecting multiple switches in sequence. Magnetic or mechanical switches should be positioned to prevent tampering, and LED indicators can be wired to show system status externally.

For KN

X systems, run wires from binary outputs to the appropriate terminals with clamping sleeves on the ends. Maintenance and Future-ProofingLeave extra space for future devices and cable expansion. Label all cables and terminals clearly for easy troubleshooting.

Separate power and data cables to reduce interference. Ensure proper ventilation to prevent equipment overheating. By following these practices, a switch cabinet will be safe, organized, and efficient, facilitating maintenance, reducing downtime, and ensuring compliance with electrical standards.
