Structure and Principle of Grating Fiber Optic Sensors

A grating fiber optic sensor is a type of Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensor used to measure physical parameters such as strain and temperature. A grating fiber optic sensor operates by embedding a periodic variation of the refractive index along a short segment of an optical fiber, forming a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG). This grating reflects a specific wavelength of light, known as the Bragg wavelength, while transmitting all other wavelengths.

When the fiber experiences changes in strain or temperature, the spacing of the grating and the refractive index shift, causing a measurable change in the reflected wavelength, which can be detected and quantified.

Structure and Working Principle

The FB

G is created by exposing the fiber core to intense ultraviolet light, producing a permanent periodic modulation of the refractive index. Broadband light sent through the fiber is partially reflected at each grating segment, and constructive interference occurs at the Bragg wavelength. The reflected wavelength shifts proportionally with strain or temperature changes, enabling precise sensing.

Applications

Grating fiber optic sensors are widely used in: Structural health monitoring of bridges, buildings, and aerospace componentsEnvironmental monitoring for temperature and pressure variationsIndustrial and biochemical sensing where electromagnetic interference immunity is critical Their advantages include high sensitivity, immunity to electromagnetic interference, and the ability to multiplex multiple sensors along a single fiber. In summary, a grating fiber optic sensor is a Fiber Bragg Grating-based optical sensor that converts physical changes in the environment into measurable shifts in reflected light wavelength, making it a versatile tool for precision sensing in engineering and scientific applications.

A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is a type of distributed Bragg reflector constructed in a short segment of optical fiber that reflects particular wavelengths of light and transmits all others.
