Optical power meters do not use red light sources

An optical power meter may not emit red light if the built-in light source is off, the wavelength is incorrectly set, or the device lacks a visual fault locator function.

Check the Light Source Function

Many optical power meters include a Visual Fault Locator (VFL) or LED flashlight to emit visible red light for fiber tracing or fault detection. If your meter does not emit red light, first ensure that the LED or VFL function is activated. On some meters, this requires pressing a dedicated LED key or a combination of keys to turn on the visible light source.

Verify Wavelength Settings

Optical power meters are calibrated for specific wavelengths, typically in the infrared range (850nm, 980nm, 1300nm, 1310nm, 1490nm, 1550nm, 1625nm). Red light is around 650nm, which may not be supported by your meter's sensor or light source. If the meter is set to measure a wavelength outside the visible red range, the red LED may not activate.

Inspect Device and Connections

Ensure the fiber or sensor port is clean, as dirt or misalignment can prevent light emission. Confirm the power button is on and the device is not in auto-off mode. Some meters require holding the power button to cancel auto-off.

Check for hardware issues: a burned-out LED or internal fault can prevent red light emission.

Calibration and Mode

Some meters require entering a calibration or test mode to activate the visible light source. Refer to the user manual for instructions on entering calibration mode or switching between absolute and relative power measurement modes, as these settings can affect LED operation.

Summary

If your optical power meter does not emit red light: Activate the LED/VFL function using the correct key combination. Ensure the meter supports visible red light (around 650nm). Clean the fiber connectors and check alignment.

Verify the device is powered on and not in auto-off mode. Consult the manual for calibration or mode settings that may affect the LED. Following these steps should help determine whether the issue is configuration-related or a hardware problem.

Optical Power Meters: Understand Their Uses and Internals

Optical power meters can measure the power of both single-mode and multimode fibers. In single-mode fiber, the rays travel down its entire length without any internal reflection at all.

The FOA Reference For Fiber Optics

While a light bulb may put out 100 watts, most fiber optic sources are in the milliwatt range (0.001 watts), so you won''t feel the power coming out of a fiber and it''s generally not harmful.
