Vertical Cable Tray Installation Standards

Vertical cable trays must be installed with proper support, spacing, grounding, and cable securing to comply with NEC and IEC standards while ensuring safety and accessibility.

Key Installation Requirements

Support and Mounting: Vertical cable trays must be securely fastened to walls, columns, or structural supports to handle the weight of cables and environmental loads such as wind or seismic forces. Supports should be spaced according to manufacturer recommendations and applicable standards like IEC 61537 to prevent sagging or mechanical stress on cables. Cable Securing: Cables in vertical trays should be fastened to the tray's transverse members using listed and approved cable ties.

This prevents movement, maintains spacing, and reduces mechanical stress, especially at transition points where cables enter equipment or raceways. Avoid overtightening ties to prevent damage to cable jackets. Clearances and Accessibility: Maintain at least 12 inches of vertical clearance above trays for installation and maintenance access, as required by the 2026 NEC update.

Vertical trays must remain accessible and cannot be installed in hoistways or enclosed spaces. Cable Fill and Separation: Do not exceed 40% fill for power cables and 50% for control or instrumentation cables. High-power and low-power cables should be separated to prevent electromagnetic interference (EMI).

Proper fill ensures heat dissipation and reduces the risk of overheating. Grounding and Electrical Continuity: Metallic trays can serve as equipment grounding conductors if they meet NEC requirements. Ensure electrical continuity across tray sections, especially in vertical runs, to maintain grounding integrity.

Material Selection: Choose tray materials—aluminum, steel, or FRP—based on environmental conditions, load requirements, and corrosion resistance. For outdoor installations, use UV-resistant ties and corrosion-resistant materials to ensure long-term durability. Thermal Expansion and Transitions: For long vertical runs, consider expansion splice plates to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction.

At transitions to equipment or other raceways, provide strain relief to protect cable terminations. Compliance with Standards: Follow NEC Article 392 for U. S. installations and IEC 61537 for international compliance.

These standards cover mechanical strength, fire resistance, ventilation, fill ratios, and compatibility with fittings, bends, and risers. By adhering to these requirements, vertical cable trays can be installed safely, maintain cable integrity, and ensure long-term system reliability while meeting regulatory standards.
