Double busbars with bypass busbar connection

A double busbar with bypass busbar system allows uninterrupted power supply during maintenance by providing two main buses and an auxiliary bypass bus for flexible load transfer.

Overview

In a double busbar system with a bypass busbar, each feeder or circuit can be connected to either of the two main buses, while a bypass bus provides an additional path to maintain supply when a circuit breaker is under maintenance or a bus section is isolated. This configuration combines the flexibility of a double bus system with the operational continuity of a main and transfer bus system.

Configuration and Operation

Two Main Buses: Bus I and Bus II serve as the primary paths for power distribution. Each feeder can be connected to either bus through its circuit breaker. Bypass Bus: An auxiliary bus connected via a bypass branch allows a feeder to be supplied without passing through its main bus breaker.

This enables maintenance on the main bus or its breaker without interrupting the feeder supply. Circuit Breaker Arrangement: Each feeder typically has one circuit breaker, and additional isolators are used to connect to the bypass bus. The bus coupler breaker allows transfer of load between the two main buses.

Maintenance Procedure: To perform maintenance on a feeder breaker, the load is shifted to the bypass bus. The main breaker can then be opened safely while the feeder remains energized.

Advantages

Uninterrupted Supply: Load can be maintained on the bypass bus while a main bus or breaker is under maintenance. Operational Flexibility: Either main bus can act as the primary bus, and feeders can be transferred between buses as needed. Reduced Number of Breakers: Compared to a double breaker/double bus system, fewer breakers are required while still maintaining flexibility.

Rapid Fault Isolation: In case of a fault, the affected bus can be isolated without interrupting other feeders.

Limitations

Complex Layout: Requires additional isolators for each feeder and careful planning of the bypass connections. Closed Loop Constraints: The system is less extendable; opening a breaker in the loop can reduce reliability temporarily, as a fault in the open loop may interrupt multiple feeders. Higher Initial Cost: More equipment and space are needed compared to simpler busbar arrangements.

Applications

This configuration is ideal for high-voltage substations (e.g., 220 kV and above), critical load centers, or installations where continuous supply is essential and maintenance must be performed without service interruption. It is commonly used in transmission substations, generator switchyards, and vital industrial networks.

Summary

A double busbar with bypass busbar system provides a balance between operational flexibility, maintenance efficiency, and reliability. By allowing feeders to be supplied via a bypass bus during maintenance, it ensures uninterrupted power while minimizing the number of circuit breakers compared to a full double breaker/double bus system. Proper design and planning are essential to manage the complexity and maintain system reliability.
