The main components of optical fiber cables are

A fiber optic cable consists of five main components: the core, cladding, coating, strengthening fibers, and outer jacket, each serving a critical role in transmitting light signals and protecting the cable.

Core

The core is the central part of the fiber where light signals travel. It is typically made of ultra-pure silica glass (SiO2), though some short-range fibers use plastic cores. The core's diameter varies depending on the fiber type: single-mode fibers usually have a 9-micron core for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission, while multimode fibers have larger cores of 50 or 62.

5 microns for shorter distances and multiple light paths. The core's refractive index is higher than the surrounding cladding, enabling total internal reflection to confine light within the core.

Cladding

Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer with a lower refractive index that reflects light back into the core. This ensures minimal signal loss and allows light to travel long distances efficiently. The cladding also provides a protective optical boundary that maintains signal integrity.

Coating or Buffer

The coating (or tight buffer) is a protective layer around the cladding that shields the fiber from physical damage, moisture, and environmental stress. It prevents scratches and contamination that could degrade signal quality. Dual-layer acrylate coatings are commonly used for durability.

Strengthening Fibers

Strength members, often made of aramid yarn (Kevlar), provide tensile strength to the cable, preventing stretching and breakage during installation or handling. In outdoor or armored cables, additional steel or fiberglass strength members may be included to withstand tension and environmental stress.

Outer Jacket

The cable jacket is the outermost layer that protects the internal components from mechanical damage, UV exposure, moisture, and chemical hazards. Jackets are selected based on installation environment, such as indoor, outdoor, or direct burial, and may be made from materials like PVC, LSZH, or polyethylene.

Summary

Together, these components ensure that fiber optic cables can transmit data reliably over long distances, resist environmental and mechanical stress, and maintain signal integrity. Understanding these parts is essential for selecting the right fiber type and cable design for specific applications, whether for telecommunications, data centers, or campus networks.
