Which structures in optical cables can be welded

In optical cables, the fiber cores, ferrules, and alignment clips can be welded, typically using thermal welding methods after proper preparation of the fiber ends.

Fiber Core Welding

The primary structure that is welded in optical cables is the fiber core itself. Thermal welding, also known as fusion splicing, involves melting the ends of stripped and cleaned optical fibers and pressing them together to form a continuous optical path. This process requires removing the protective coating and cleaning the fiber with alcohol to ensure a high-quality weld and minimal signal loss.

Mechanical welding, in contrast, uses plastic housings to align fibers without melting them, but it is less efficient and produces lower-quality joints.

Ferrules and Clips

In addition to the fiber cores, ferrules and alignment clips can also be welded. Ferrules, which hold the fiber in place, can be welded to clips or substrates to ensure precise alignment with laser diodes or other optical components. For example, a clip may be laser welded to a substrate, and the ferrule of the fiber optic cable is then welded to the center of the clip to achieve optimal optical alignment.

This ensures stable mechanical positioning and high optical performance.

Protective Sleeves and Distribution Boxes

While the fiber core and ferrules are the main welded structures, protective sleeves or distribution boxes are used to secure and shield the welded fibers. These components are not melted themselves but are integrated with the weld to protect the joint and maintain alignment. The sleeve may shrink over the weld after placement, making the connection integral and durable.

Summary

Fiber cores: Welded directly via thermal fusion for signal continuity. Ferrules: Can be welded to clips or substrates for precise alignment. Alignment clips: Laser welded to substrates to hold fibers in optimal positions.

Protective sleeves/distribution boxes: Provide mechanical protection and stability for the welded joint. Proper preparation, including stripping, cleaning, and precise cutting of fibers, is essential for successful welding and minimal signal attenuation.
