Safe distance from communication towers for lightning strikes

Stay at least 30 meters (100 feet) away from communication towers during thunderstorms, and seek fully enclosed shelter immediately if thunder is heard.

General Lightning Safety Near Towers

Lightning tends to strike the tallest objects in an area, including communication towers, utility poles, cranes, and trees. Because towers are conductive and elevated, they are particularly vulnerable during thunderstorms.

OSHA and CD

C guidelines emphasize that no outdoor location is safe when thunderstorms are nearby, and hearing thunder indicates lightning is close enough to strike, even if the storm appears distant.

Recommended Safe Distance

While there is no universally fixed distance, practical safety measures include: Minimum distance: Maintain at least 30 meters (100 feet) from towers and other tall structures during a storm. This distance helps reduce the risk from direct strikes and side flashes caused by earth potential rise (EPR) near the base of the tower. Avoid conductive paths: Stay away from metal fences, scaffolding, and equipment connected to the tower, as lightning can travel through conductive materials.

Elevated areas: Do not stand on rooftops, hills, or scaffolding near towers, as elevation increases strike risk.

Shelter Recommendations

Buildings: Seek fully enclosed buildings with electrical wiring and plumbing, which provide effective protection. Vehicles: If buildings are unavailable, a hard-topped metal vehicle with windows rolled up is a safe alternative. Duration: Remain in shelter for at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder to ensure the storm has passed.

Additional Precautions

Monitor weather: Continuously check NOAA or local weather reports for thunderstorm warnings. Avoid isolated trees or open spaces: These areas increase the likelihood of a strike. Do not touch metal objects: Avoid contact with metal tools, fences, or tower components during storms.

By maintaining a safe distance, avoiding conductive paths, and seeking proper shelter, the risk of injury from lightning near communication towers can be significantly reduced.
