Solutions for laying optical cables in trenches

Optical cables in trenches can be installed using trenching, ploughing, or milling methods, often with conduits for protection and proper burial depth to ensure long-term performance.

Trenching Techniques

Conventional trenching involves excavating a trench to a specified depth, typically around 1–1. 65 meters depending on local regulations, soil conditions, and frost levels. Trenches should be straight with minimal bends to maintain the fiber's minimum bend radius and prevent signal loss.

In urban or high-traffic areas, narrow trenching or horizontal directional drilling (HDD) may be used to minimize surface disruption. Ploughing is a minimally invasive method where armored or ducted fiber cables are directly laid into the ground using a specialized plough, suitable for open areas and rural environments. Milling is another alternative, often used for microducts or composite conduits, allowing precise installation with minimal surface impact.

Conduit and Cable Protection

Using HDP

E or PVC conduits is recommended to protect cables from moisture, mechanical stress, and future excavation. In high-risk areas, additional protective pipes such as RCC or GI pipes can be installed over the conduits. Conduits should be continuous, straight, and properly joined to facilitate cable pulling and future maintenance.

Conductive marker tape is often buried above the conduit to aid in future location and prevent accidental damage.

Burial Depth and Environmental Considerations

The burial depth depends on local regulations, soil stability, frost penetration, and surface activity. Standard depths range from 1 to 1. 2 meters, with deeper burial in cold climates or high-risk areas.

Armored cables or reinforced conduits may be used in rocky or high-traffic zones to enhance durability. Proper soil compaction and backfilling are essential to prevent ground shifts that could damage the cable.

Installation Process

Planning and Site Survey: Define cable routes, access points, and avoid tight bends or obstacles. Excavation: Dig trenches or prepare the ground for ploughing/milling. Conduit Laying: Install conduits with pulling tapes or lubricated ducts for smooth cable installation.

Cable Pulling or Direct Burial: Pull fiber cables through conduits or lay armored cables directly in the trench. Backfilling and Protection: Cover the cables with soil, sand, or protective layers, ensuring proper compaction. Splicing, Termination, and Testing: Perform fusion splicing, connector termination, and OTDR testing to verify signal integrity.

Standards and Best Practices

Following standards like DIN 18220 ensures uniform quality, safety, and regulatory compliance for trenching, milling, and ploughing methods. Proper documentation, as-built surveys, and consideration of existing infrastructure are critical for approvals and future maintenance. By combining careful planning, appropriate trenching methods, conduit protection, and adherence to standards, optical fiber cables can achieve long-term reliability and efficient network performance.
