China Unicom Fiber Optic Pigtail Splicing

Fiber optic pigtails are short fiber cables with a factory-installed connector on one end and bare fiber on the other, used for fusion or mechanical splicing to integrate with China Unicom's network infrastructure. What is a Fiber Optic Pigtail? A fiber optic pigtail is a short length of optical fiber with a connector on one end and an exposed fiber on the other.

The connector end plugs into active devices, ODF ports, or patch panels, while the bare fiber end is spliced to incoming fiber cables to create a low-loss, permanent connection. Unlike patch cords, which have connectors on both ends, pigtails are designed for field termination and network integration. They are widely used in FTTH, FTTB, FTTX, CATV, and LAN networks.

Types of Fiber Pigtails

Connector Types: SC, LC, ST, FC, E2000, with UPC or APC polish options. Fiber Types: Single-mode (OS1/OS2, G657) and multimode (OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4) fibers. Configurations: Available in single, 6, or 12 fiber bundles, including ribbon fan-out pigtails for multi-core fibers.

Lengths: Standard lengths (e.g., 0. 9m, 3m) or custom lengths for specific installations.

Splicing Methods

Fusion Splicing: The most common method for China Unicom deployments, providing low insertion loss and high reliability. The bare fiber of the pigtail is fused to the incoming fiber using a fusion splicer, creating a permanent joint. Fusion splicing is preferred for long-term network stability and high-performance applications.

Mechanical Splicing: Uses a precision alignment fixture to join fibers temporarily or permanently. It is faster but may have slightly higher insertion loss compared to fusion splicing.

Applications in China Unicom Networks

Optical Distribution Frames (ODF): Pigtails are spliced to incoming cables and connected to patch panels for organized fiber management. FTTH/FTTB/FTTX Deployments: Pigtails enable seamless connection from backbone cables to subscriber terminals.

High-

Density Networks: Duplex LC or MT-RJ pigtails are recommended for high-density installations. Network Upgrades: Pigtails are used in dual-splicing or network revitalization projects to extend the life of existing equipment while maintaining low-loss connections.

Best Practices

Choose the correct connector and polish type to match equipment and network standards. Maintain minimum bend radius and secure cables in patch panels or trays to prevent signal degradation. Use color-coded pigtails for easy identification in multi-fiber installations.

Test splices for insertion loss and return loss to ensure network performance meets specifications. Manufacturers and Suppliers in ChinaShenzhen-based companies like Optico Communication Co., Ltd provide a wide range of fiber optic pigtails, including SC, LC, ST, FC, and E2000 types, with options for single-mode, multimode, and ribbon fan-out configurations. These suppliers cater to both domestic telecom operators like China Unicom and international markets, offering pre-terminated, high-quality pigtails suitable for fusion or mechanical splicing.
