National Standard Low Voltage Busbar Arrangement Sequence

The standard low-voltage busbar arrangement sequence typically follows the order: L1, L2, L3, N, PE, with proper spacing and insulation according to IEC 61439.

Standard Busbar Sequence

For low-voltage switchgear assemblies up to 1000 V AC, the typical busbar arrangement is: L1 (Phase 1) – First phase conductorL2 (Phase 2) – Second phase conductorL3 (Phase 3) – Third phase conductorN (Neutral) – Positioned after the three phasesPE (Protective Earth) – Usually at the far end or separated for safetyThis sequence ensures phase identification, safety, and ease of connection for outgoing circuits and tap-off units. The arrangement may vary slightly depending on the manufacturer or specific national regulations, but the L1–L2–L3–N–PE order is widely accepted.

Spacing and Installation Considerations

Clearance and Creepage: Maintain minimum distances between conductive parts to prevent arcing and ensure insulation integrity. Busbar Sizing: Cross-sectional area is determined by rated current, short-circuit withstand, and temperature rise limits. Copper or aluminum may be used, with copper preferred for higher conductivity.

Mounting Orientation: Horizontal or vertical installation affects cooling and current-carrying capacity. Proper ventilation is required to avoid overheating. Diversity Factor: The busbar load is calculated using a diversity factor to avoid oversizing.

For example, a 2700 A total load with a 0. 6 diversity factor results in a main busbar rating of 1620 A. Compliance and VerificationIEC 61439 / EN 61439: Provides design verification, assembly requirements, and testing procedures for low-voltage switchgear assemblies.

Short-

Circuit and Thermal Tests: Busbars must withstand rated short-circuit currents and maintain temperature rise within limits. Verification includes mechanical, electrical, and thermal tests. Documentation: Assembly drawings, technical specifications, and test reports must be maintained to demonstrate compliance.

Practical Notes

Protective earth (PE) should be clearly separated from phase conductors to reduce fault risk. Neutral busbars may be sized differently depending on load type and harmonics. Tap-off units and distribution points should follow the same phase sequence to maintain system consistency.

Following this standard sequence and installation practice ensures safety, reliability, and compliance with international low-voltage busbar standards.
