How to test optical cable attenuation

Optical cable attenuation is measured using tools like OLTS, OTDR, or a light source and power meter to quantify signal loss along the fiber.

Understanding Attenuation

Attenuation is the reduction in optical signal power as light travels through a fiber optic cable. It occurs due to intrinsic factors such as absorption and scattering within the fiber material, and extrinsic factors like bends, connectors, or splices. Attenuation is expressed in decibels (dB), with higher values indicating greater signal loss and lower transmission efficiency.

Methods to Measure Attenuation

Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) / Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM)Connect a calibrated light source to one end of the fiber and a power meter to the other. Measure the optical power at the receiver and compare it to the transmitted power to calculate total link loss. Testing can be performed at the operational wavelength of the network (e.g., 850 nm, 1310 nm, or 1550 nm).

Bidirectional testing is recommended for higher accuracy, measuring from both ends of the fiber.

Optical Time-

Domain Reflectometer (OTDR)Sends pulses of light into the fiber and measures backscattered light to create a trace. Allows identification of attenuation along the fiber, including splice and connector losses, bends, and faults. Attenuation is calculated by analyzing the slope of the OTDR trace, typically in dB/km, providing both point-specific and overall loss information.

Single-

Ended or Launch Cable MethodA fiber pigtail or launch cable is connected to the source, and a temporary mechanical splice connects to the fiber under test. The power meter measures the output, accounting for splice or connector losses. This method is useful for field measurements but may introduce slight uncertainties compared to direct OLTS testing.

Best Practices

Use proper connectors and clean fiber ends to avoid extrinsic attenuation. Perform tests at the network's operational wavelength to ensure accurate results. Consider modal distribution in multimode fibers, as higher-order modes experience more attenuation.

Document results for network acceptance, troubleshooting, and maintenance purposes. By following these methods and standards, technicians can accurately measure optical cable attenuation, identify problem areas, and ensure reliable fiber optic network performance.
