Fiber Optic Grating Methane Sensor

Fiber optic grating methane sensors detect methane concentrations using optical fiber gratings, offering high sensitivity, fast response, and safe operation in explosive environments.

Working Principle

Fiber optic grating methane sensors typically use fiber Bragg gratings (FBG) or sampled/chirped fiber gratings to detect changes in methane concentration. The principle relies on the interaction between the gas and the optical fiber, which alters the refractive index or thermal properties of the fiber, causing a measurable shift in the grating's reflected wavelength. For example, in a laser-heated FBG sensor, the Bragg wavelength changes according to the thermal conductivity of the surrounding gas, allowing methane concentration monitoring safely without electrical sparks.

Other designs use multimode interference (MMI) structures coated with methane-sensitive films such as ZIF-8/PDMS, where methane absorption changes the cladding mode, shifting the interference spectrum to quantify gas concentration. Sensor Types and EnhancementsFBG-based sensors: Measure wavelength shifts due to thermal or refractive index changes; suitable for explosive environments and pipeline monitoring. Sampled or chirped fiber gratings: Enable differential absorption detection of multiple methane absorption lines simultaneously, improving accuracy and compensating for light source instability.

Polymer/MOF-coated fibers: Functional coatings like PDMS combined with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) enhance methane adsorption, increasing sensitivity and enabling distributed sensing. Non-source multi-point sensors: Use optical splitters and time-sharing acquisition modules to monitor methane at multiple locations simultaneously, achieving long-range, real-time detection with low detection limits (~58 ppm) and fast response times (
