Specifications of cast iron cable trays

Cast iron cable trays are robust, corrosion-resistant systems designed for heavy-duty cable support in industrial and high-temperature environments.

Material Properties

Cast iron cable trays are made from gray or ductile cast iron, offering high compressive strength, rigidity, and durability. They are resistant to mechanical deformation and can withstand heavy cable loads. Cast iron provides excellent fire resistance and can tolerate elevated temperatures without significant loss of structural integrity, making it suitable for industrial plants, power stations, and chemical facilities.

Mechanical Specifications

Load Capacity: Cast iron trays can support high cable weights, often exceeding 500–1000 kg/m depending on tray width, thickness, and span between supports. Tray Widths: Typically range from 100 mm to 600 mm, with custom sizes available for specialized applications. Tray Depth: Usually between 50 mm and 150 mm, providing sufficient space for multiple cable layers.

Span Between Supports: Recommended support spacing is 1/4 of the tray span to minimize deflection and stress at joints, in line with NEMA VE-1 guidelines. Rung or Solid Bottom: Cast iron trays can have solid bottoms for maximum protection or ventilated designs to allow heat dissipation.

Corrosion and Environmental Resistance

Cast iron naturally forms a protective oxide layer, enhancing corrosion resistance. For harsh environments, trays are often coated with epoxy, galvanization, or powder coating to prevent rust and chemical attack. They are suitable for outdoor, industrial, and high-humidity environments.

Standards and Compliance

Cast iron cable trays are manufactured to comply with international standards such as: NEMA VE-1 and VE-2 for metal cable tray systems, covering load/span classes, construction, and installation.

IE

C 61537 for cable tray and ladder systems, ensuring mechanical strength, electrical safety, and environmental performance.

U

L 568 for performance and safety in industrial applications.

Installation Considerations

Support and Fixings: Use M6 or larger bolts for couplers and connections; ensure proper alignment to avoid stress points. Thermal Expansion: Cast iron has low thermal expansion, but allowances should be made for temperature variations in long runs. Handling: Due to weight, trays require careful handling and lifting equipment to prevent damage or injury.

Advantages

High mechanical strength and rigidityExcellent fire and heat resistanceLong service life in industrial environmentsMinimal deflection under heavy cable loadsLimitationsHeavier than steel or aluminum trays, requiring stronger support structuresLess flexible for complex routing compared to lighter materialsHigher initial cost, though offset by durability and low maintenance Cast iron cable trays are ideal for heavy-duty, high-temperature, and corrosive environments, providing reliable cable management where strength and longevity are critical. Proper design, support, and compliance with standards ensure safe and efficient cable installation.
