No internet connection when using fiber optic router

A no internet connection with a fiber optic router is often caused by loose or damaged cables, ONT issues, or router misconfigurations, and can usually be resolved by systematic troubleshooting.

Check Physical Connections

Start by inspecting all fiber optic and Ethernet cables. Ensure the fiber cable from the wall outlet to the ONT is securely connected and free from sharp bends or damage, as fiber transmits data as light and is sensitive to physical stress. Verify that the Ethernet cable from the ONT to your router is properly plugged into the WAN or designated fiber port.

Loose or dirty connectors are a common cause of connectivity loss.

Power Cycle Devices

Turn off your router, ONT, and any intermediary devices. Wait 30–60 seconds, then power them back on in sequence: first the ONT, then the router, and finally any connected devices. This can resolve temporary glitches and re-establish the connection.

Inspect ONT and Router Status

Check the status lights on the ONT and router. A “LOS” (Loss of Signal) indicator on the ONT or transceiver signals a fiber signal issue. Ensure the router firmware is up to date, as outdated firmware can cause configuration conflicts.

Access the router's admin panel to verify WAN settings and confirm it is set to receive an IP from the ONT.

Clean and Maintain Connectors

Fiber connectors can accumulate dust or oil, which degrades signal quality. Use lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol to clean connectors if necessary. Avoid bending the fiber cable sharply or placing heavy objects on it.

Test and Replace Components

If the problem persists, test with a known-good Ethernet cable or router. Swap transceivers or ONT units if available to isolate hardware faults.

For FTT

H connections, ensure the fiber runs directly to your home without damage; for FTTN setups, check the copper segment from the node to your home.

Contact Your ISP

If all local troubleshooting fails, contact your Internet Service Provider. They can remotely check the ONT, signal strength, and line integrity, and dispatch a technician if there is a physical fiber fault. By following these steps—checking cables, power cycling, inspecting devices, cleaning connectors, and testing hardware—you can systematically identify and resolve most fiber optic internet connectivity issues.
