IoT uses Lebanon to extend long-distance optical cable OS2

Lebanon is actively deploying OS2 single-mode fiber as part of a nationwide fiber-optic expansion, enabling long-distance, high-speed connectivity suitable for IoT and advanced digital services.

Fiber-

Optic Infrastructure in LebanonLebanon has relaunched its fiber-optic rollout to modernize its outdated copper network and support high-speed internet across the country. The project, led by the state-owned operator Ogero, includes Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Cabinet (FTTC) deployments, targeting over 325,000 homes in major cities within 16–24 months. The infrastructure is designed to support minimum speeds of 50 Mb/s in FTTC areas, with potential upgrades to 100–1000 Mb/s for FTTH users.

Use of OS2 Fiber for Long-Distance ConnectivityFor backbone and long-distance connections, Lebanon is deploying OS2 single-mode fiber, which is optimized for long-range transmission with minimal signal loss. OS2 fiber is particularly suitable for IoT networks, as it can handle high-bandwidth applications and support data-intensive services such as video-on-demand, IPTV, and industrial IoT devices. The network also incorporates OM4 multimode fiber for shorter distances and high-speed premises connections.

Integration with IoT and Digital ServicesThe upgraded fiber network provides a robust platform for IoT applications, enabling reliable connectivity for smart cities, industrial automation, and remote monitoring. By replacing copper lines with OS2 fiber, Lebanon can extend long-distance optical links between central offices, data centers, and end-user premises, ensuring low latency and high throughput essential for IoT devices.

Project Implementation and International Collaboration

The fiber expansion involves both local and international companies, including Huawei, Nokia, and Calix, working alongside Lebanese firms to connect end users to central offices. The project is structured in multiple phases, starting with network design, material delivery, and cabinet connections, followed by gradual household integration. Funding has been allocated in the 2024–2025 state budgets, ensuring continuity of the rollout.

Benefits and Future Outlook

The deployment of OS2 fiber in Lebanon will: Enable long-distance, high-speed data transmission for IoT and broadband services. Support advanced digital services like IPTV, video-on-demand, and cloud applications. Provide a foundation for private ISPs and data service providers to leverage the fiber network.

Improve internet penetration and reliability, positioning Lebanon as a potential regional tech hub. By leveraging OS2 fiber for long-distance optical links, Lebanon is creating a scalable, high-performance network capable of supporting the growing demands of IoT, smart infrastructure, and next-generation broadband services.
