Working principle of 100M optical module

A 100M optical module converts 100Mbps electrical Ethernet signals into optical signals for fiber transmission and back, enabling reliable full-duplex communication over multimode fiber.

Core Function

A 100M optical module, such as a 100BASE-FX SFP, operates as a transceiver that bridges electrical and optical domains. It receives a 100Mbps electrical signal from a network device (switch, router, or media converter) and converts it into an optical signal for transmission over fiber. At the receiving end, the module converts the optical signal back into an electrical signal of the same bit rate, ensuring seamless communication between devices.

Internal Components

The main components of a 100M optical module include: Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Contains a laser diode (LD) or LED that emits modulated light corresponding to the input electrical signal. Laser Driver Circuit: Amplifies and modulates the electrical signal to drive the laser diode at the correct intensity and timing.

Receiver Optical Sub-

Assembly (ROSA): Includes a photodetector diode that converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals. Limiting Amplifier: Amplifies the received electrical signal to a standard voltage level suitable for the network device. Controller/EEPROM: Manages module operation, monitors parameters like temperature and optical power, and ensures proper communication with the host device via the I²C interface.

Signal FlowElectrical-to-Optical Conversion: The module receives a 100Mbps electrical signal from the device's Ethernet port. The laser driver modulates the laser diode to emit light pulses representing the digital data. Optical Transmission: The modulated light travels through multimode fiber at a wavelength of 1310nm, supporting distances up to 2 km depending on fiber type and link budget.

Optical-to-

Electrical Conversion: At the receiving module, the photodetector converts the light pulses back into electrical signals. Signal Conditioning: The limiting amplifier ensures the electrical signal meets the required voltage and timing specifications before outputting it to the network device.

Advantages and Applications

Extended Reach: Unlike copper 100BASE-TX, 100BASE-FX can transmit over longer distances (up to 2 km) with better noise immunity.

Hot-

Swappable: SFP modules allow easy replacement or upgrades without powering down the device. Flexible Deployment: Supports full-duplex communication and can be used in switches, routers, and media converters for industrial or legacy Ethernet networks. In summary, a 100M optical module functions as a compact, hot-swappable transceiver that ensures reliable 100Mbps Ethernet communication over fiber by converting electrical signals to optical signals and back, leveraging TOSA, ROSA, and supporting circuitry for accurate signal transmission and reception.
