Railway Primary Distribution Box Connection Method

A Railway Primary Distribution Box (PDB) connects incoming high-voltage feeders from the traction substation to outgoing feeders, using busbars, circuit breakers, isolators, and protective devices to ensure flexible, safe, and reliable power distribution.

Overview of Connection

The Railway PD

B serves as the interface between the traction substation and local functional supply points (FSPs) or secondary distribution points. It receives power from the substation, typically at medium voltage (e.g., 20–25 kV AC), and distributes it to multiple feeders along the trackside for traction, signalling, and other infrastructure loads.

Typical Connection Components

Incoming Feeders: The PDB receives power from the secondary side of the traction substation transformer. Each feeder is connected through a feeder circuit breaker and a double-pole isolator to allow safe disconnection for maintenance. Busbar Arrangement: Inside the PDB, busbars are used to interconnect incoming and outgoing feeders.

The busbar configuration allows full operational flexibility, enabling switching between feeders or isolating sections without interrupting supply. Outgoing Feeders: Outgoing feeders supply Functional Supply Points (FSPs), trackside signalling cabinets (LOCs), and other railway infrastructure. Each feeder may include protection devices such as fuses, reclosers, or automatic sectionalizers to prevent faults from propagating.

Earthing and Return Path: One end of the transformer secondary winding is solidly earthed at the substation and connected to the track return system.

The PD

B ensures proper grounding and continuity of the traction return path. Remote Operation and Flexibility: PDBs are designed for remote operation, allowing switching between feeders or bus sections via isolators or bus couplers. This ensures continuity of supply even if one feeder or source fails.

Connection Method Summary

Step 1: Incoming feeder from the traction substation enters the PDB through a circuit breaker and isolator. Step 2: Power is distributed via busbars to multiple outgoing feeders. Step 3: Each outgoing feeder is protected with fuses or reclosers and routed to FSPs or trackside equipment.

Step 4: Earthing and track return connections are maintained to ensure safety and proper traction current flow. Step 5: Remote control and bus couplers allow feeder changeover without interrupting service.

Key Considerations

Voltage Levels: Typically 20–25 kV AC for traction feeders. Reliability: Redundant feeders and bus couplers ensure uninterrupted supply. Safety: Circuit breakers, isolators, and earthing prevent faults and allow safe maintenance.

Compliance: Equipment and connections conform to railway standards such as NR/L2/SIGELP/27409 and BS EN61439. This connection method ensures that the Railway Primary Distribution Box can safely and efficiently distribute traction and infrastructure power, maintain operational flexibility, and provide high reliability for railway operations.

Railway Traction Distribution Systems: Power Supply Arrangements

Connections are taken from the buried rail to the running rail by means of Mild Steel flats (75 mm x 8 mm) two numbers for each track. These flats are given suitable protective coatings to prevent corrosion.
