Electrical connection boxes are typically made from plastic, metal, fiberglass, or thermoplastic polymers like ABS and polycarbonate, depending on their application and environmental requirements.

Common Materials

Plastic: Many residential and light commercial connection boxes are made from PVC, polycarbonate, or ABS plastic. These materials are lightweight, corrosion-resistant, cost-effective, and provide electrical insulation, eliminating the need for grounding in most indoor applications. Metal: Steel, stainless steel, and aluminum are commonly used for industrial or heavy-duty applications.

Metal boxes offer excellent mechanical strength, fire resistance, and grounding capabilities. Stainless steel, particularly grade 316L, is preferred for outdoor or corrosive environments due to its superior resistance to pitting and corrosion.

Fiberglass/

Glass Reinforced Polyester (GRP): GRP is used in industrial and outdoor settings where high mechanical strength, chemical resistance, and long-term durability are required. It is resistant to oils, UV exposure, and extreme temperatures, making it suitable for harsh environments. Thermoplastic Polymers: Materials like ABS and polycarbonate are also used for junction boxes, offering high impact resistance, electrical insulation, and ease of installation.

These are common in both residential and commercial applications.

Material Selection Considerations

Environmental exposure: Outdoor or wet locations require corrosion-resistant materials like stainless steel or GRP. Electrical safety: Plastic and thermoplastic boxes provide insulation, while metal boxes require grounding. Mechanical strength: Industrial applications often demand metal or GRP boxes to withstand physical stress.

Fire resistance: Metal boxes are preferred in high-heat or fire-prone areas. In summary, the material of a connection box is chosen based on application, environmental conditions, and safety requirements, with plastic, metal, fiberglass, and thermoplastic polymers being the most common options.
