A circular rotary switch in a distribution box allows selection and control of multiple circuits or phases through a single rotating knob, providing a robust and mechanical method to manage electrical connections.

Function and Purpose

A circular rotary switch is an electromechanical device designed to control multiple electrical circuits from a single control point. In a distribution box, it is commonly used to select between different power sources, phases, or circuit paths, such as in three-phase systems or multi-circuit setups. The switch provides tactile feedback and a mechanical detent mechanism to ensure it stays in the selected position, preventing accidental misalignment.

How It Works

The switch consists of a rotating spindle or knob with a protruding arm or spoke that contacts terminals arranged in a circular pattern. Each position of the switch connects the input terminal to a specific output terminal, activating the corresponding circuit. The number of positions can vary, commonly ranging from 2 to 16 positions, depending on the application.

Detents or notches ensure precise positioning and prevent intermediate contacts. Installation in a Distribution BoxIdentify Input and Output Terminals: Determine which terminal receives the incoming power and which terminals connect to the circuits or phases. Connect Incoming Wires: Attach the main supply wire to the input terminal using soldering or a suitable connector.

Connect Outgoing Wires: Connect each circuit or phase to the corresponding output terminal in a clockwise or sequential order. Test the Switch: Rotate the switch through all positions and verify continuity with an ohmmeter to ensure correct connections.
