What is a wound optical cable

A wound optical cable is a type of fiber-optic cable in which the fibers are helically wrapped or coiled around a core or host conductor to enhance mechanical flexibility, strain distribution, and sensing capabilities.

Overview

A wound optical cable, also known as a helically wound cable (HWC) or wrapped optical cable, consists of optical fibers spirally wrapped around a central core or mandrel. This design allows the cable to absorb mechanical stress, such as bending, stretching, or vibration, without damaging the delicate fibers inside, making it suitable for harsh environments or dynamic installations.

Applications

Overhead Power Lines: Wrapped optical cables, sometimes called ground-wire wound optical cables (GWWOP), are installed along power line conductors. The cable is wrapped around the host conductor using specialized equipment, providing communication links for utility networks while withstanding environmental and electrical stresses. Distributed Sensing: Helically wound fiber-optic cables are widely used in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS), distributed strain sensing (DSS), and distributed temperature sensing (DTS).

The helical wrapping improves sensitivity to both axial and radial strain, allowing accurate detection of vibrations, seismic waves, or structural changes in the surrounding medium.

Design Features

Wrapping Angle: The angle at which the fiber is wound around the core affects sensitivity and mechanical performance. Lower angles increase sensitivity to broadside waves, while higher angles improve axial strain response. Core Material: The central core or mandrel can be metallic or non-metallic, depending on the application, and provides structural support.

Protective Layers: Additional coatings, strength members, and outer jackets protect the fibers from environmental damage, moisture, and mechanical stress.

Advantages

Enhanced Durability: The helical structure distributes stress along the fiber, reducing the risk of breakage. Flexibility: Wound cables can bend and twist without compromising signal integrity. Improved Sensing: In DAS and DSS applications, the helical design allows the cable to detect multi-directional strain and vibrations more effectively than straight fibers.

Versatility: Suitable for both outdoor installations on power lines and underground or industrial sensing applications. In summary, a wound optical cable is a specialized fiber-optic cable designed for mechanical resilience and enhanced sensing performance, achieved through the helical wrapping of fibers around a core or host conductor. This design is widely used in utility communications, geophysical monitoring, and industrial sensing systems.
