Cable tray support tie rod installation method

Cable trays can be securely installed using threaded tie rods by following proper support spacing, alignment, and hardware procedures to ensure safe and reliable cable management.

Preparation and Material Handling

Before installation, inspect all materials including cable trays, ladders, fittings, and threaded rods to ensure they match approved shop drawings and are free from damage or corrosion. Store trays horizontally on a flat surface with timber supports at intervals of about 1 meter to prevent bending or warping. Ensure all tools and equipment comply with project requirements and safety standards.

Threaded Rod Support Installation

Mark the support locations on ceilings or walls according to the approved layout, maintaining horizontal and vertical runs only. Drill and anchor threaded rods using appropriate metal plugs or anchors into the structural ceiling or wall. Attach 'L' angles or slotted 'C' channels to the threaded rods using hex nuts and washers.

Maintain a maximum support spacing of 1. 2 meters to prevent sagging. For ladder trays, position clamps around the siderails, place washers on the threaded rod, and lift the tray so the rod passes through the clamp holes.

Secure with a second washer and hex nut, adjusting the tray to the desired elevation.

Alignment and Leveling

Ensure trays are level and aligned along the route. Use center-hung supports for easier cable installation and to allow cables to be deposited from either side. For double ladder clamps, thread the upper nut 50 mm above the existing tray, slide the clamp half over the tray, lift the new tray section, and secure with the second set of nuts and washers.

Handling Bends, Branches, and OffsetsProvide adequate support at bends, T-pieces, crossovers, and offsets to maintain structural integrity. Cut trays to required lengths using appropriate tools, remove burrs, and treat cut edges with zinc-rich paint to prevent corrosion.

Safety and Compliance

Follow local electrical codes (e.g., CEC) and occupational safety procedures. Maintain clearance for cable pulling and future maintenance. Install copper earth links at every joint to ensure electrical continuity and provide fire sealant at fire-rated wall crossings.

Do not exceed the maximum load per hanger (typically 318–340 kg) and maintain proper spacing between supports.

Final Checks

Verify that all trays are secure, level, and free from sharp edges. Ensure all hardware is tightened and expansion provisions are included at building joints. Label trays as per project specifications for easy identification and maintenance.

By following these steps, cable trays installed with threaded tie rods will provide a safe, durable, and organized support system for electrical and communication cables in industrial or commercial facilities.
