Gyts optical cable stripping

Stripping a GYTS optical cable requires careful removal of the outer PE sheath, steel strength member, and buffer tubes to access the fibers without causing damage.

Understanding GYT

S Cable StructureGYTS cables are designed for outdoor use and consist of several layers: a central steel or FRP strength member, loose buffer tubes containing the optical fibers, filling compounds to prevent water ingress, and an outer polyethylene (PE) sheath for environmental protection. The fibers inside are glass and coated with a protective layer, often twisted in bundles to reduce stress. The steel strip (S in GYTS) provides tensile strength for aerial or duct installations.

Stripping Procedure

Prepare Tools: Use a fiber optic cable stripper, utility knife, or specialized GYTS stripping tool. Ensure you have safety gloves and eye protection.

Remove Outer P

E Sheath: Score the PE sheath longitudinally without cutting too deep to avoid nicking the steel strength member or buffer tubes. Peel back the sheath carefully along the scored line. Expose the Steel Strength Member: Cut or remove the corrugated steel tape if present.

For cables with a central steel wire, carefully cut around it to free the buffer tubes. Access the Loose Tubes: Remove any filling compound around the tubes using a lint-free cloth or fiber-safe cleaning solution. Identify the buffer tubes and gently untwist or separate them.

Strip Individual Fibers: Use a precision fiber stripper to remove the protective coating from each fiber without breaking it. Avoid excessive bending; maintain the minimum bend radius specified by the manufacturer.

Tips and Precautions

Always measure and mark the length to strip before cutting. Avoid using standard wire cutters on fibers; they can cause micro-cracks. Work in a clean, dust-free environment to prevent contamination.

Dispose of fiber scraps safely; they can be hazardous if handled improperly. Consider training or using a splicing workstation for high-core-count cables, as recommended by fiber optic training providers.

Recommended Tools
