Energy-saving type of relay protection optical isolator

Optically-isolated solid-state relays (PhotoMOS or photorelays) provide energy-efficient, reliable relay protection by combining LED-driven optical input with MOSFET or triac output for galvanic isolation.

Working Principle

An optically-isolated relay uses a light-emitting diode (LED) on the input side to transmit a signal across an optical barrier to a photo sensor array, which then drives MOSFETs or triacs on the output side, switching the load without direct electrical contact between control and load circuits. This design ensures galvanic isolation, reduces ground loops, and protects sensitive control electronics from high voltages or transients.

Energy-

Saving Features

Low input current: A typical PhotoMOS relay requires 10–20 times less current than an equivalent electromechanical relay, e.g., 5 mA vs. 50–100 mA. No moving parts: Eliminates coil power consumption, contact bounce, and mechanical wear, extending operational life and reducing energy loss.

Low on-resistance: MOSFET-based outputs minimize voltage drop and power dissipation during conduction, improving efficiency. Fast switching: Reduces energy wasted in transitional states and allows precise control in high-frequency applications.

Applications

Industrial automation: Isolates sensor lines, drives solenoids, and protects PLC inputs. Power electronics: Controls IGBT/MOSFET gates in inverters or motor drives with minimal energy loss. Automotive systems: Provides insulated interfaces for intelligent power modules (IPMs) and high-voltage battery management.

Home/IoT devices: Safely switches mains loads while keeping microcontrollers isolated from transients. Test and measurement: Switches analog signals without relay bounce, reducing noise and improving measurement accuracy.

Design Considerations

Output type: Choose MOSFET for DC or low-leakage applications, triac for AC loads. Isolation rating: Ensure compliance with safety standards; some relays offer up to 5,000 V AC isolation. Thermal management: Rising temperatures increase on-resistance; protective circuits with negative temperature coefficients can prevent overcurrent damage.

Leakage current: Even when off, some SSRs allow small currents; consider for high-impedance loads.

Advantages Over Mechanical Relays

Silent operation, bounce-free switching, and extremely long life. Reduced power consumption and smaller footprint. Enhanced reliability under shock, vibration, and high-frequency switching conditions.

In summary, energy-saving optically-isolated relays combine low-power LED control, MOSFET or triac output, and galvanic isolation to provide efficient, reliable, and long-lasting relay protection suitable for industrial, automotive, and consumer applications.
