Cable tray elbow connection techniques

Cable tray elbows are connected using compatible fittings secured with bolts or clamps, supported properly, and bonded to maintain electrical continuity.

Selecting the Elbow Fitting

Cable tray elbows are specialized fittings designed to change the direction of the tray horizontally or vertically. Choose an elbow that matches the tray type, material, and width (e.g., ladder, ventilated, or solid-bottom trays) to ensure proper alignment and load distribution. Elbows are available in pre-fabricated angles (typically 45° or 90°) and can be horizontal or vertical depending on the routing requirement.

Mechanical Connection

Align the elbow with the adjoining tray sections so that the tray edges meet flush. Use the manufacturer-supplied bolts, nuts, and clamps to secure the elbow to the straight tray sections. Ensure that all holes are properly engaged and tightened to prevent movement.

Check for proper spacing: connectors should not be placed at the center of the span between supports; ideally, they fall between the support point and the quarter-point of the span.

Support Requirements

Install supports near the elbow to carry the weight of the cables and prevent sagging. Supports can include wall brackets, ceiling hangers, or floor-mounted stands. Follow standard spacing guidelines: for long runs, supports are typically placed every 1.

5–3 meters (5–10 ft), with additional support at elbows to handle bending stresses.

Bonding and Grounding

Install bonding jumpers at each elbow if it is part of a metallic tray system to maintain electrical continuity. Ground the tray at both ends and at expansion joints to comply with safety standards and prevent electrical hazards.

Final Checks

Ensure the elbow is level and aligned with the rest of the tray system. Verify that cables can be routed without exceeding their minimum bend radius at the elbow. Confirm that all fasteners are tightened and secure, and that the system is compliant with relevant standards such as NEMA VE 2, BS EN 61537, or manufacturer instructions.

By following these steps, cable tray elbows can be safely and efficiently connected, ensuring mechanical stability, proper cable routing, and electrical safety.
