Automatic Meter Reading

The optical power meter reading of 1577 is normal

This is not normally an issue, since the test wavelength is usually known, but has some drawbacks. An optical power meter contains a photodiode (typically InGaAs for telecom wavelengths or germanium for legacy 850nm work) that converts incoming light into an electrical current. The meter measures that current and applies a calibration curve to convert it into an optical power reading in dBm. If you have good readings that's fine, but on the other hand in the future this could cause problems. Knowing a few problems and how. The measurement may be optical power from a test source, a transmitter or the input of receiver, measured in dBm, which is "absolute" power - absolute in that it refers to power calibrated to a national standard, so two people testing the same fiber output with different power meters calibrated to. The heart of the fiber optic power meter is the photodiode sensor.

What is the reading on the optical power meter

Optical power meters usually display time-averaged power. So for pulse measurements, the signal must be known to calculate the peak power value. However, the instantaneous peak power must be less than the maximum meter reading, or the detector may saturate, resulting in wrong average readings. Also, at low pulse repetition rates, some meters with data or tone detection may produce improper or no readings. A class of "high power" meters has some type of optical attenuating element.

How to interpret a broadband optical power meter

Power meter measurement in five steps: 1) Clean the meter port and the patch cord. 5) Read the value, and compare against the link. To use a power meter for fiber optic testing, always clean connectors first with lint-free wipes or click-to-clean tools. Consistent procedures ensure accuracy. Verify light travels from. This guide walks through the full procedure -- from cleaning the connector to interpreting the result -- so your measurements are trustworthy on the first try. Its sole function is to measure the optical power level arriving at a specific point in a fiber link, expressed in dBm or mW.
