How to install a base station optical module

Install base station optical modules by preparing the module and site, handling with ESD precautions, inserting the module correctly, connecting fibers, and verifying connectivity.

Preparation and Safety

Before installation, ensure the optical module is compatible with the base station and free of physical damage. Check that the module is in an anti-static bag and that connectors are clean and undamaged. Wear an ESD wrist strap or gloves to prevent electrostatic discharge, which can damage sensitive optical components.

Keep the installation area clean, dust-free, and maintain proper temperature and humidity conditions. Never look directly into the optical module or fiber ends, as laser radiation can cause eye injury.

Module Insertion

Remove Dust Plugs: Take off dust plugs from the optical port and keep them for future use. Orient the Module: Ensure the optical module is correctly aligned with the port. If it does not insert easily, do not force it; rotate the module 180 degrees and try again.

Insert Gently: Push the module into the port until you hear a click, indicating it is securely seated. Check Seating: Gently pull the module by its sides; if it does not come out, it is properly installed.

Fiber Connection

Confirm the interface type (LC, SC, ST, FC, etc.) and select the corresponding fiber connector. Ensure the fiber type and length meet the module specifications. Clean fiber connectors and module interfaces using appropriate cleaning tools (e.g., MPO cleaner or lint-free wipes) to prevent signal attenuation.

Connect fibers carefully, avoiding excessive bending or tension, and ensure proper alignment with the module interface.

Post-

Installation Verification

Measure input optical power to ensure it is within the normal range; excessive power can damage the module. Test connectivity to confirm the module is functioning correctly and the network link is stable. Install dust plugs on any unused optical ports to protect them from contamination.

Maintenance Tips

Regularly clean optical interfaces and connectors to maintain signal quality. Avoid touching the edge connector of the module during handling. Use only certified optical modules to ensure transmission reliability and service stability.

Following these steps ensures safe, reliable installation of base station optical modules while minimizing the risk of damage or service disruption.
